Presenter: Doug Bowen Bailey

Doug Bowen-Bailey is an interpreter, educator, and resource creator who lives in Duluth, Minnesota. His primary background is interpreting in a variety of educational settings. Upon the birth of his children, he became a stay-at-home Dad who turned out to not be very good at staying home. His son started kindergarten this fall, so he cannot claim that title any more, though getting hair brushed, lunches made, and kids out the door can still be the most challenging part of his day.

He currently works as an Interpreter Training Consultant with the Northeast Service Cooperative providing mentoring services to interpreters in educational settings and interprets in a variety of community settings. Through his business, Digiterp Communications, Doug has collaborated in creating a diversity of resources for professional development for interpreters. In 2004, he was nominated by his colleagues for the Mary Stotler Award given by RID and CIT for significant contributions to interpreter education.

Workshop Description:

March 17th 10am-5 pm
Seeing the Forest and the Trees: Analyzing discourse to ensure clear interpretations
The goal of interpreting is carrying a message between languages within a specific context. Not always a simple journey. This workshop applies current understandings of linguistics and discourse analysis in practical ways to assist interpreters in doing this work. Through a series of participatory activities, you will leave with strategies for more effectively identifying and conveying the content and intent of speakers, as well as with resources for continuing on this journey of professional development without getting lost in the forest

March 18th 2006 9am-2 pm
Storytime and Beyond: Integrating the features of ASL storytelling in everyday interpreting
This highly interactive workshop will focus on developing competency in features of ASL storytelling such as effective use of space, classifier construction, and characterization. Participants will then integrate these skills in interpreting stories and other texts in which narratives are included in the broader discourse. Participants will be working from spoken English into sign language and source material is drawn from elementary, middle school, and high school settings. Come prepared to apply linguistic theory in practical ways, hone skills that apply to any interpreting situation, and learn and laugh in a safe environment with your colleagues.
