VTRID E-Letter Archives: Fall 2003 Coming Soon! Hello everyone! I hope this edition of the VTRID E*Letter finds you all well and taking the time to enjoy this fantastic Fall weather. This October Edition of the VTRID E*Letter is chock full of valuable information. Please take the time to look at it and give it your attention. There is a lot going on for you to take advantage of. I would also value your input on this form of news sharing...does it work for you? Are there any changes you would recommend? Is there anything you like about it? First off, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing executive board, Wendy Schneider and Stephanie Cramer as co-presidents and Barb Walker as Vice-President/Secretary. We really appreciate your work on our part for the past 2 years. I would also like to thank Lianne Moccia for all of her hard work in keeping the Vermont Mentorship Program going for the past few years, she has now handed the reins over to a new committee. Please see below for more information. On behalf of VTRID, I would like to thank Janet Dufresne for keeping the VTRID lending library in such good shape for our membership's use. Look forward to a future issue of the VTRID E*Letter to include a list of our holdings. On our professional development front, Mary Rodriguez has worked tirelessly in systematizing the planning of workshops that are hosted by VTRID. Thank you. Stephanie Cramer's planning of the "The Ethical Decision Making for Interpreters" Workshop was a roaring success and we had a record number of folks attend the membership meeting after the workshop. The minutes from that meeting are included in this E*Letter. Please note that "action items" have been bolded and high lit by our fantastic secretary, Kristal Hier. If you volunteered to do something at the meeting, you will see your name jump out at you in the minutes. You will also be receiving an email from Kristal as a follow up to the action that needs to be taken. Thank you all for your support! We, the executive board of VTRID, are all very excited for the coming year.
Cheers,
Amy Williamson-Loga (williamson_loga@hotmail.com), President

When: Novermber 8th RSVP and Payment must be made by November 2nd! VTRID will be co-sponsoring this Intensive Series with Arkady & Molly From: Cat Brenn-Bear, CI/CT (terpstuff@aol.com) Hi, All!! I recently got back from Theresa Smith's ASL Immersion Institute for Certified Interpreters in Seattle. Although I thought the quality of the teaching was wonderful, and I recommend their program highly for just certified interpreters, it just wasn't as advanced as I was hoping for. I wanted an ASL immersion experience that would really challenge me, stretch me and push me to the next level in my ASL fluency (a broad expectation, I know). I was hoping the Seattle institute would do that for me, but it did not. So, I started thinking about how to make what I want become a reality. I got in touch with Arkady Belosovsky, whom I know from his time in Massachusetts, and who is now teaching at the UNH. He has agreed to teach four parts of a five part advanced series on classifiers, role shift, non-manual markers and eye gaze for certified interpreters. This would be like an ASL immersion institute - for language acquisition. Molly Wilson has signed on to do the fifth part, which will be the culmination of the prior parts: text in translation - giving the participants the opportunity to apply everything they've learned language acquisition-wise to the interpreting process. The opening session will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 16, 17 and 18 (6p - 9p, 9a - 5p and 9a - 1p respectively), and would be open to any certified interpreter who wanted to take it. The subsequent sessions will be February 21 from 10a - 5p, March 6 from 10a - 5p, May 8 from 10a - 5p (we are skipping April due to schedule conflicts) and a Saturday and Sunday in June, TBD. Participants will be offered the opportunity to take just the opening session and pay one fee, or to commit to all the sessions and pay a lump sum for that. For those who commit to the whole series, "homework" will be assigned between each session, to be reviewed each of the next sessions. There may also be pre-readings or pre-assignments given. This is meant to be an advanced, intensive ASL immersion-like experience. I have already reserved these dates and times on the NUIEP calendar with Diana Doucette. This series will be open to CDI's, Coda and hearing interpreters. Arkady Belosovsky and Molly Wilson are both native signers. Both are accomplished teachers, presenters and working interpreters. Arkady has worked locally, nationally and internationally, both as an interpreter and as a highly requested presenter on both language and history. Molly's workshops on language, power and team interpreting, as well as text in translation, have been requested all over the US. I am hoping to draw interpreters from Mass, NH, VT and Maine and to hold the workshop in a central location. I am also hoping to receive monies from each state to defray the costs of such a large undertaking, and to make the series affordable for all who would like to take it. Please look for further info and fliers coming soon to this list, and in hard copy to your homes. Thanks!!! :) Cat (terpstuff@aol.com) How to Work with A Deaf Interpreter VTRID members, Cheryle Giberson & Mechelle Palmer, are planning a pre-membership meeting workshop on how to work with a deaf interpreter.
When: December 13th, 1-4pm Look for more details to come!

She expressed gratitude for going with VTRID support. Her favorite part was seeing Rebecca Blitch and rooming with her! There were many good workshops, lots of choices. Joan appreciated Stephanie Jo Kent's presentation on different approaches to interrupting speakers, power dynamics. She also attended a medical anatomy workshop that was very clear and helpful. Dean and Pollard workshop on "Demand/Control Theory" was a 5 star workshop. It was an efficient and fun way to catch up on CEU's. Joan also brought back a booklet from WFD on international country names. An important decision made at the conference was a phase in of educational degrees: By 2008 hearing interpreters must have an AA degree, by 2012 for Deaf interpreters. By 2012 hearing interpreters must have a BA, by 2016 Deaf interpreters must have a BA. Amy clarified that after December 31 the CI/CT test as we know it will not be offered again. Anyone who passes the current written test will still have 5 years to take the performance. But, after Jan 1, all will have to take the new NAD/RID combined, which is scheduled to start next year. The new test will have a written test, a panel interview and a performance test (which will replace the two separate tests). There is a new draft Code of Ethics. To provide feedback on the new proposed Code of Ethics visit RID's website at www.rid.org.
